Alastair Steele

Railway Historian, Author & Craftsman

Alastair Steele is a railway historian, author and craftsman, who has a particular passion and enthusiasm for the wonderful world of railways. A decade of experience under his belt restoring vintage carriages on a heritage railway in the south of England, along with experience writing both academically and for magazines about the subject, has given him an insightful view of this fascinating subject. With a particular interest in trains that are slightly ‘off the beaten track’ – such as narrow gauge and industrial railways – his first book, Locomotion, charts a unique course through the history of the worlds railways.

In his spare time, Alastair plays guitar and writes songs in acoustic band The Intention Craft, enjoys following the trials and tribulations of his beloved Brighton & Hove Albion, and is looking forward to introducing his young daughter to exciting trains of every size.

Writing

Alastair’s first book, Locomotion, is a history of railways for readers 7+. From their origins in European industry, up to the incredible high-speed passenger lines that are breaking speed records, and Maglev routes of the future, Locomotion shows what a fascinating subject railways are. The book is sumptuously illustrated by the incredibly talented Ryo Takemasa. This is Ryo’s first picture book as well, and no doubt the first of many for this brilliant artist.

Alastair has also begun writing for magazines, most recently with articles for specialist railway modelling magazine Narrow Gauge and Industrial Railway Modelling Review, discussing his modelling of the Ffestiniog Railway in 4mm scale.

Locomotion

“A stunningly illustrated tribute to all things train, Locomotion celebrates the ingenuity and usability of trains past, present and future.”
